Built in 1896 to house the Virginia Paper Company, the building became the home of the Lady Byrd Hat Factory in 1965. The Lady Byrd Hat building is located at the corner of Virginia and Byrd Streets, near the Turning Basin of Richmond’s newly constructed Canal Walk. The adaptation of the 150-foot canal frontage will accommodate outdoor dining at the canal level and an overlook balcony at the main floor elevation. This multi-tenant project is expected to include an entertainment venue, offices, restaurants, and retail. Rehabilitation of Lady Byrd, the only historic building directly on the Canal, is underway.
Lady Byrd Hat is within easy walking distance of the area's largest law firms, advertising agencies and financial institutions, as well as the headquarters for the Fifth Federal Reserve District. Careful top-to- bottom rehabilitation of Lady Byrd Hat will include recycling of original materials such as native cobblestones, trusses, and massive support posts. Historic structural elements will be featured, among them the massive foundation on the canal side. This foundation is the original wall of the Kanawha canal, begun in 1785 as part of George Washington’s grand plan for the transportation of goods to the Mississippi. Tenants at Lady Byrd Hat will enjoy a unique blend of modern design and technology, complementing the historic legacy of this building's location and original construction.
